Prompt engineering is the practice of crafting the wording, structure, and examples in an instruction to a language model to get better or more reliable output. It includes techniques like giving examples, specifying format, and breaking a task into steps.
Prompt engineering is the practice of shaping the instruction so the model does what you meant. It matters because a model has no access to your intent beyond the words you supply, and small structural changes, an example, an explicit role, a stated output format, move results more than politeness or emphasis ever do. Its status is contested: as models improve, some of it stops being necessary, while the structural parts survive.
Adding two worked examples to the prompt cut the error rate in half.
