English
Chain of thought is a prompting technique where a model writes out its intermediate reasoning steps before giving a final answer, instead of jumping straight to a conclusion. This step-by-step reasoning noticeably improves accuracy on math, logic, and multi-step problems.
Chain of thought is prompting a model to lay out intermediate steps before answering, which measurably improves performance on problems that need several linked deductions. The steps are generated text, not an inspection of the model's internals. They are a plausible account of a route to the answer, and can be wrong even when the answer is right. Reasoning models internalise this behaviour rather than needing it requested.
Chain-of-thought prompting raised accuracy on the maths benchmark.
