A large language model is a neural network trained on massive text data to predict and generate language. It can answer questions, write text, and follow instructions across many tasks without task-specific training.
A large language model is a transformer trained on enough text that it can continue almost any prompt plausibly. Its only native operation is predicting what comes next; everything else people use it for, answering, summarising, translating, writing code, is that one operation pointed at a task. Size matters because capabilities appear at scale that are absent at smaller scale, which is why parameter counts are reported as news.
