Capital Is Chasing Humanoids, Especially in China

The money flowing into humanoid robotics is heavily concentrated in China. Ant Group has made 12 investments in the space since the start of 2025, including a recent $73.58 million round for Zeroth, on top of earlier stakes in Unitree and Galaxea. That capital is backing an industry that already dominates production: China accounted for 97% of the roughly 19,000 humanoid units shipped globally last year. Smarter Models, Harder Training Environments

Mistral has released Robostral Navigate, an 8-billion-parameter model hitting 76.6% success on the R2R-CE navigation benchmark, a strong result for a model of that size. Separately, a new paper called Robo-ValueRL proposes a framework for more reliable value estimation in offline-to-online reinforcement learning, reporting 86% success on millimeter-precision chip insertion and 84% on generalizable block disassembly after training on 240 hours of offline demonstrations plus over 3,000 online rollouts.

Feeding robots better training data is its own bottleneck, which is what MIT CSAIL and Toyota Research Institute's SceneSmith system targets. Led by CSAIL PhD student Nicholas Pfaff, SceneSmith deploys three coordinating AI agents (a designer, a critic, and an orchestrator) built on GPT-5.2's vision-language capabilities to generate 3D training scenes with up to six times more objects per scene than earlier methods, aiming to close the sim-to-real gap that has long limited manipulation research.

Autonomy Beyond the Lab

Perhaps the starkest signal of robotics leaving the lab comes from Ukraine, where Forterra's autonomous Lancer ATVs have logged over 2,500 miles across 1,100-plus missions in the past nine months, hauling more than 777,000 pounds of cargo and completing 52 casualty evacuations under fire. Forterra has raised over $500 million to build this capability, marking one of the first documented sustained deployments of American autonomous ground vehicles in an active conflict zone.
