The Core · TL;DR

  • Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launched June 9, 2026, then hit US export controls on June 12 after Amazon researchers found a jailbreak exposing software vulnerabilities.
  • Controls lifted June 30 (Mythos 5 restored for select US orgs June 26); Fable 5 returned globally July 1 with a new safety classifier blocking the exploit in over 99% of cases.
  • Anthropic coordinated with Amazon, Microsoft, and Google via its Glasswing initiative on a shared industry framework for handling model jailbreaks.
  • Starting July 12, Claude subscribers on $20-$200 plans must pay API-equivalent usage fees ($10/M input, $50/M output tokens) to keep using Fable 5 beyond capped weekly limits.

Claude Fable 5 lasted three days on the open market before Washington pulled it back. Anthropic launched Fable 5 alongside its cybersecurity-oriented sibling, Mythos 5, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Both models run on the same underlying architecture: Fable 5 ships with tighter general-use safeguards, while Mythos 5 trades some of those guardrails for defensive cybersecurity capability. By June 12, the US government had slapped export controls on both models, after Amazon researchers demonstrated they could bypass Fable 5's safety layer simply by prompting it to hunt for software vulnerabilities.

The restrictions didn't last long. Export controls came off both models on June 30, and Mythos 5 access was restored earlier still, on June 26, for a specific set of US organizations following government sign-off. Fable 5 returned to general availability on July 1, rolling out across the Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Anthropic says the fix was a new safety classifier that catches the flagged jailbreak technique in more than 99% of attempts and automatically reroutes suspicious requests to Claude Opus 4.8 instead. The company also used the episode to push a broader industry response, coordinating with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other partners in its Glasswing initiative on a shared framework for identifying and patching model jailbreaks.

A subscription perk becomes a metered feature

For subscribers, the return of Fable 5 came with fine print. Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans got the model folded into up to 50% of weekly usage limits, but only through July 7. Starting July 12 at 11:59 PM PT, Anthropic began charging $20, $100, and $200-per-month subscribers extra to keep using Fable 5, at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, the same rates it charges API customers. (Some reporting listed the year as 2025, but the surrounding timeline of June and July 2026 events makes clear this refers to 2026.) Anthropic says it wants to fold Fable 5 back into flat-rate subscription plans "when sufficient capacity allows," without committing to a date.

The sequence says something about where frontier-model economics are heading. A model good enough to warrant export restrictions is also, apparently, expensive enough that Anthropic can't absorb it into existing subscription tiers without capacity constraints. Charging API-equivalent rates to consumer subscribers, even temporarily, marks a departure from the flat-fee model that has defined Claude's Pro and Max tiers.

The jailbreak itself is notable less for its novelty than for its speed of resolution. A model release, a government export ban, an industry-coordinated fix, and a full restoration all happened within three weeks, a turnaround that suggests both regulators and AI labs are getting faster at responding to security flags on frontier systems. Whether that pace holds as models grow more capable, and as the cybersecurity stakes around dual-use safeguards rise, is the open question this episode leaves behind.
