Hallucination

Evaluation

Pronounced al-halwasaPrimer

English

A hallucination is a confident but false or fabricated statement produced by an AI model, such as an invented fact, citation, or quote. It happens because the model generates plausible-sounding text rather than verifying truth.

A hallucination is output that is fluent, confident, and false. It is not a malfunction in the ordinary sense: a language model is built to produce the most plausible continuation, and a plausible continuation is not required to be a true one. The practical consequence is that fluency carries no evidential weight, a fabricated citation reads exactly like a real one, which is why verification has to be structural rather than left to the reader's judgement.

The model hallucinated a court case that does not exist.

Why this form: «الاختلاق» (fabrication) is arguably the more honest description, but «الهلوسة» is the established rendering and matches the English term readers will meet.
