Suno Studio 2.0 Adds MIDI, Chat Controls and Custom AI Effects

Suno wants its AI music platform to feel less like a text-to-song generator and more like a full production suite. The company's Studio 2.0 update introduces MIDI support, a conversational chat interface, and the ability to build custom AI-powered effects plugins from scratch.

The chat feature is the update's most distinctive addition. Instead of clicking through menus, users can type instructions to shape a track, an approach Suno frames as talking to the DAW "like it's a bandmate." It sits alongside a more conventional set of production tools: distortion, delay, reverb, compression, EQ, plus automation for arranging those effects over time.

MIDI support marks a notable expansion for a platform originally built around prompt-based song generation. Combined with stem separation and multitrack export, it pushes Studio 2.0 closer to the territory of established digital audio workstations, letting musicians pull generated parts apart and rework them individually rather than treating AI output as a finished, uneditable file.

The custom effects plugin builder lets users generate their own AI-driven audio effects inside the app. Suno currently isn't charging credits for that feature, though the company has signaled a credit system could arrive later as usage scales. One limitation stands out for professional producers: Studio 2.0 still doesn't support third-party plugins or VST integration, meaning it can't yet plug into workflows built around industry-standard effect libraries.

Premier subscribers get one clear technical upgrade: unrestricted export at 32-bit/48 kHz, a spec aimed at users who need studio-grade output rather than compressed streaming-ready files.

The release lands as Suno faces mounting scrutiny over how its models were trained. A German court recently found that the company violated German copyright law and rejected the argument that its training practices would qualify as fair use under U.S. law, a ruling that adds legal weight to complaints from rights holders in Europe. Separately, CEO Mikey Shulman has moved to cap download limits, a response to concerns about AI-generated tracks flooding streaming platforms in bulk.

Together, the two developments frame Studio 2.0 less as an isolated feature drop and more as part of a broader effort to professionalize the platform while its underlying training methods remain under legal challenge.
