Meta AI Moves Into Threads Direct Messages, Expanding Its Ecosystem Lock-In

Threads users can now chat directly with Meta AI inside their private messages, not just in the public feed. Meta confirmed the rollout on Monday, July 27, 2026, marking a significant step in bringing its chatbot deeper into the app's core experience.

The feature lets users share Threads posts, images, links, and videos straight into a conversation with Meta AI, treating the bot as a persistent contact rather than a feed novelty. Previously, Threads users in select markets could only summon Meta AI through public replies and posts.

This is not the assistant's first appearance in Meta's messaging surfaces. Meta AI has been embedded in DMs on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for some time, and Threads is effectively catching up to the rest of the family of apps.

A Familiar Playbook

The company is testing the DM feature in a limited set of markets first, gathering user feedback before a broader release. That cautious rollout expands globally starting Monday, according to the reporting.

The underlying motive is straightforward. Meta wants to keep users engaged with its own AI rather than ducking out to competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini for quick questions, summaries, or content generation.

Not every user wants the bot inserted into their experience, and Meta has built in some controls. People can mute the @meta.ai account, select "Not interested," or hide its replies to limit how often it surfaces in their feed.

Those options suggest Meta is aware of the tension between pushing AI adoption and avoiding user fatigue, a balance other platforms have struggled with as they bolt chatbots onto existing social products. Whether Threads users embrace the DM assistant or quietly mute it will likely shape how aggressively Meta expands the feature beyond its initial test markets.
