Google DeepMind Loses CEO and Chief Scientist in Same Week

Sundar Pichai used a Wednesday announcement to reshape Google's AI leadership in one stroke, confirming that both Demis Hassabis and Jeff Dean are stepping back from the roles that have defined the company's AI push for years.

Hassabis is not leaving. He becomes chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet's chief scientist, a shift from operational leader to strategic figurehead. He stays based in London and keeps running Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug-discovery AI venture, while continuing to work directly with Pichai on AGI strategy.

Jeff Dean's exit is more complete. After 27 years at Google, where he was employee number 30, Dean is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at automating machine learning and scientific research. Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat is joining him as co-founder.

A New Operator Takes the Wheel

Filling the operational gap is Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's former chief technology officer, who becomes Google's SVP of DeepMind and will report directly to Pichai. He keeps his title as Google's chief AI architect and now oversees Gemini model development, frontier AI research, the Gemini app, and Google's developer platforms.

Kavukcuoglu has worked alongside Hassabis for more than 13 years, a detail Google is clearly leaning on to signal continuity despite the reshuffle at the top.

The founding team behind Discovery Loop has worked together for periods ranging from 14 to 30 years, according to the companies involved.

Discovery Loop itself arrives with serious backing. Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures are leading its seed round, joined by Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital. Notably, Alphabet is also a founding investor, meaning Google is financially backing the venture its own longtime chief scientist just departed to build.

Why the Timing Matters

The simultaneous departures land at a moment when Google is racing rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic on model capability and enterprise deployment. Losing a CEO and chief scientist in the same announcement could unsettle that narrative, but the structure suggests Google is trying to preserve institutional memory rather than sever it.

Hassabis retains influence over AGI strategy without day-to-day operational load, and Kavukcuoglu's promotion keeps a Hassabis-adjacent figure in charge of Gemini's roadmap. Dean's move outside the company, backed in part by Alphabet's own capital, hints that Google sees value in supporting ML-automation research even from outside its walls.

What remains unclear is how much authority Hassabis retains in practice as chair versus how much shifts entirely to Kavukcuoglu and Pichai. The new org chart answers who reports to whom, but not yet how decisions on Gemini's future direction will actually get made.
